As we have written before, last year the veterinary inspection of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development would have closed us down had we not begun the process of shelter registration in accordance with the provisions of the new Act on requirements for shelters. It was very hard and demanding to comply with all the conditions, but at the beginning of February the registration was completed. The Čakovec shelter, run by association Prijatelji, became only the second registered shelter owned by an NGO, with a capacity to accommodate 320 animals.

Last year 294 were accepted by the shelter, and 282 animals were given a new home.

A new challenge, reaching an agreement with the local authorities and city councils on the financing of the shelter, still awaits us. The basics have been agreed on, but as it usually goes with politicians, it will be a process that will again probably last several months.

In this transitional period we must once again rely on ourselves and on our loyal members, volunteers and everyone who supports us. We accept a new animal to the shelter almost every day. The cost of obligatory vaccination, microchipping and veterinary care (in only one week we went out three times to save dogs who were hit by a car and left wounded on the street) are extremely high. At this moment we owe the veterinary office 66 000 kn for veterinary costs for the last 4 months.

We would like to emphasize that the Čakovec shelter is one of the rare registered shelters that does not euthanase animals after sixty days. Instead, we try to find them new homes and secure best possible living conditions until they are permanently adopted.

At this moment the shelter cares for 232 dogs and 12 cats.
