During
April and May many happy and sad things happened in the shelter for abandoned
animals in Čakovec.
First the
sad news – we took in forty new dogs. Five of them, puppies, did not survive
since they were left in front of the shelter fence at the age of only a few
days or maybe a week. Three very small kittens were also left. Their chance of
survival was very small. Fortunately, we managed to find a replacement mum for
them. However, one of those kittens did not survive.
Time and
again we appeal to citizens not to separate puppies and kittens from their mums
when they are that little, because otherwise they are destined for a certain
death. Although people think we have so much resources to take care of them, we
still are not all-mighty, and we have many animals to take care of (250 at the
moment). So there simply is no chance for survival for the newly born, left
without their mother and without getting proper immunity.
Be more
compassionate, because those are living beings, and not just some old rags that
you can leave in front of someone's door as you please.
We hope
someone will donate a video surveillance system to the shelter. That way we
could find those irresponsible people and they could be sanctioned under the
provisions of the Animal Welfare Law. The penalty for the abandoning of animals
may be up to 2,000 Euros.
Sad news is
also that we still don't have the support of the local authorities, except for
the city of Čakovec, which really helped a lot. So we ask all citizens to
influence the consciousness of politicians. Organizing and running a shelter
like ours is of great social interest. It cannot be the responsibility of
members and volunteers of a non-profit organization and the members of similar
non-profits domestically and abroad, but the responsibility of those who by law
have the duty to establish and run a shelter, and that means all cities and
districts in Međimurje county.
Therefore,
we ask the citizens to spread that consciousness in their place of residence.
And now the
good news. During May we ran a spay and neuter project for all animals in the
shelter, which was completely financed by foreign donors of the Animal Friends
Croatia organization in Zagreb. With the help of the Tierwald society from Germany
we also received all materials for the raising of a 1600 meter fence. This
project is in progress and we ask for help from anyone who can volunteer to
finish this demanding work.
The
demanding task of spaying and neutering was carried out by the veterinary
doctors from the Bioinstitut d.o.o. organization, led by dr. Miljenko Cmrečak.
They also did 20 procedures for free, and gave us a 50% discount on animal care
services. It was not easy to carry out 100 procedures in one month, but with
their expertise and responsibility, we did it.
Promming
d.o.o. company from Čakovec donated some iron for the fence, and Kozar
elektromarketing d.o.o. company donated electric infrastructure and one ton of
cement.
The City of
Čakovec issued a permit to make a fenced yard next to the shelter, where dogs
could run and play. That also made us very happy.
Balog
instalateri company donated some 70 meters of water pipelines, which will bring
water to every yard in the shelter. That will significantly ease our work
because we won't have to carry heavy buckets full of water several times a day
from the water source to every separate yard or stall.
Betaplast
company donated some sand. And once again, a big thank you to our biggest donor
and helper, Tierwald society from Germany. Without their help we could not
survive these hard times.
We also
started a cooperation with the Meke šapice society, which no longer runs a
shelter for abandoned animals, but helps with adoptions through the media. They
ceded their column in Međimurje newspapers to us. We would like to thank the
director of the Međimurje newspapers for letting us advertise for free in their
column.
Of course,
we must not forget our precious members and volunteers, who we thank for all
their help. We invite them to dedicate part of their free time and holidays to
our dear animals. That way we will welcome the winter fully equipped, with new
roofs over the stalls, which will not leak, with a finished fence, with tiles
on the roof of a new building that we built, and with heating in medicine
stalls and quarantine, so the sick animals would feel better and warmer.
In the end,
here is a list of things that are urgently needed to finish construction in the
shelter:
360 square
meters of wood for the roof 360 square
meters of tiles for the roof 300 meters
of wooden battens, 5 by 8 centimetres, for new roof on old stalls 300 square

meters of gravel for the yards materials
for construction of a septic tank the size of 6 cubic meters 150 meters

And, of
course, if you have the means, please make a donation for covering the
veterinary costs to this account: Association for the Protection of Animals "Friends", A. Schulteissa 19, 40000 Čakovec, Croatia, IBAN: HR&& 2392 0071 1000 6274 9, Međimurska banka d.d. Čakovec, SWIFT: MBCKHR 2X We thank you
